Psychiatry is a specialized field of medicine concerned with prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and research of mental disorders. Mental disorders are behavioral or psychological syndromes that are associated with distress or disability (impairment in functioning).

The department was established in 1991, by professor Abdelaal alidrisi

The department participate in the teaching and training of the student in altigani almahi and taha bashaar hospitals ,workshops .lectures,reaserches, conferences and other academic activates .The students are teached and trained  to attain the essential basic knowledge about the mental disorders and be able to assess their patients to reach a diagnosis, set a plan of management &make the appropriate referral to psychiatric hospitals.

The department provide it is services in evaluation, assessment of student mental health and management  of their psychiatric proplems
